Amma: Memories of my Grandmother
Coming in September 2020
The Gujral Foundation is pleased to present a site-specific contemporary dance and theatre performance titled Amma: Memories of my Grandmother by dancer and choreographer Revanta Sarabhai at 24 Jor Bagh, New Delhi.
Amma: Memories of My Grandmother is a grandson’s ode to a grandmother. In this audio-visual production, Revanta captures fragments of his memories of his grandmother, the world renowned Mrinalini Sarabhai (1918-2016), demystifying the pioneering figure to reveal the woman behind the legend.
For the world, Mrinalini Sarabhai was a path breaking dancer-choreographer, author, cultural diplomat and one of the pioneers who brought Bharatanatyam from inside the temples and onto the world stage, redefining culture and beauty. Yet, behind the extraordinary legend is the ordinary human who secretly shared tea with her grandchildren, animatedly read them fairy tales, had a collection of umbrellas to match each of her sarees and had a Mary Poppins like handbag that contained anything one would ever need.
Visitors can look forward to Revanta transforming 24 Jor Bagh into a ‘cabinet of curiosities’ that piece together—through live dance, video, collections of objects and soundscapes—his memories of growing up with the woman that was universally known as ‘Amma’. Walking through the rooms of the house, the audience will discover quirky and rather unknown aspects of her, through his eyes.
Revanta is a dancer, choreographer and actor forming the third generation of the legendary dance family after Mrinalini Sarabhai and Mallika Sarabhai. With strong foundations in Bharatanatyam and Kalaripayattu, and years of experience working with contemporary dance, as a choreographer, Revanta has developed a movement vocabulary that brings together the expressiveness and geometry of Indian classical forms, with the dynamic energy and fluidity of other styles. Rooted in traditional dance and performance forms, he strives to create cutting-edge work that is immersive and responsive to the society and times we live in. Revanta’s work has been showcased at numerous prestigious venues and festivals across the world.
