Outset India Mumbai Launch

The Outset India Mumbai launch was an exclusive evening of experiential art by the renowned contemporary artist, Shilpa Gupta, at the Gallery BMB, Mumbai in September 2011. The launch was sponsored by YES Bank and was very well attended by art collectors, art enthusiasts, curators, corporates.
The artist’s works that were displayed at the launch included an interactive video installation titled ‘Untitled’. The projection showed seven young women (the artist herself in each case), dressed in camouflage uniforms. The seven animated figures actively controlled by the visitors, moved according to programmed commands. Their instructions and statements, spoken as if they are automated, ran on the floor in front of the projection. Also, on display was her work titled "There is no explosive here".

Shilpa creates artworks using interactive video, websites, objects, photographs, sound and public performances to probe and examine subversively such themes as desire, religion, notions of security on the street and on the imagined border. Her work has been shown in leading international institutions and museums such as the Tate Modern, Serpentine Gallery, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Daimler Chrysler Contemporary, Mori Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New Museum, Chicago Cultural Center, Louisiana Museum and Devi Art Foundation amongst others.
Outset Contemporary Art Fund’s Indian chapter, Outset India was established in 2011 by Feroze Gujral. Outset India is a philanthropic organization dedicated to supporting new art through private funding at public spaces. It provides a platform for contemporary art in India, and for Indian artists abroad. The organization aims to offer vital support for artists and art organizations.
